At the end of February this year we held a reception in central Glasgow to celebrate the company’s 40th birthday. The actual date we started was 1st March 1980 but it was easier for all concerned to hold the event a couple of days earlier, on the Friday evening. The office building where we began is now an ‘event venue’ and we were delighted to be able to host the reception back there, three addresses ago. We were joined by our clients, former clients, former staff members, all the media and most of our suppliers, past and present. It was a very pleasant, carefree evening enjoyed by all. It didn’t occur to any of us that less than four weeks later we would all be closing down our premises.
Few, if any, commentators are predicting anything other than a serious recession when we eventually get back to whatever becomes normal. During the past three months we have all had to adapt to a situation none of us has ever experienced before and some people have done truly wonderful things. The ‘Just get it done’ philosophy has been refreshingly evident in lots of places. Battening down the hatches is most definitely not the way ahead for any sector of our economy. In advertising and marketing especially, the way ahead needs high standards, total commitment and long hours. And that, unsurprisingly, was what we had to do 40 years ago.
